Sigma Implants 46MP Sensor In New Compact Camera

Sigma has implanted the Foveon X3 imaging sensor featured in their D1 and D2 cameras into their new compact camera, the DP3 Merrill.

Recognising light of different colours penetrate silicon to different depths, the sensor captures all primary RGB colours "at each and every pixel location" over three different layers to ensure "the capture of full and complete colour."

Sigma believes the absence of moiré eliminates the need for a low-pass filter and, combined with their Dual TRUE II image processing engine, the DP3 Merrill produces images distinguished by supreme tonal gradation.

The understated compact camera features a 50mm f/2.8 optic capable of a focal range equivalent to 75mm on a 35mm SLR. It has an ISO range of ISO 100 to ISO 6400 and a lens ring can be used to manually focus images; however, it features an 'easy to use' 9 point autofocus mode.

A large memory buffer enables the Foveon X3 Merrill to capture 7 RAW images continuously at 4 frames per second. These photos can be recorded in JPEG format or RAW and JPEG simultaneously.

Although fluent in capturing still images, videos are captured at a limp VGA (640-by-480) resolution.

The understated camera features a 3 inch TFT LCD monitor that has a 920,000 pixel resolution and it stores files on its SD (SDXC) compatible memory card.

Sigma has yet to reveal the Foveon X3 Merrill's local pricing and availability.
