'Project Morpheus': Sony Virtual Reality Device Revealed

And it's soon to be a reality.

Sony Virtual Reality headset immerses gamers fully into play, declared Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Worldwide Studios on stage at the Game Developers Conference 2014 overnight, where the VR project, codenamed Project Morpheus was unveiled.

Presence is the 'killer app', Virtual Reality heightens emotion, and games are only one type of content that can be used on VR technology, according to Sony presentation slides, making it clear VR is the next big thing in gaming.

VR is going to be pervasive, and it is going to be used for all sorts of things you might not think it would be used for, Yoshida said.

Sony's prototype VR gaming headset has a Full HD 1080p LCD display with 90-degree field of view and integrates with PlayStation Camera and Move.

It's not wireless but Sony hopes to make it cable free in the future.

It also supports full 360-degree movement and forward prediction.

Project Morpheus is the "culmination of our work over the last three years to realize our vision of VR for games, and to push the boundaries of play" said Yoshida.

"The thing that makes VR special is really the feeling of being in another place... there's no way to explain it to you that will make sense, but it's that feeling of presence."

"VR has been a dream of many gamers since the computer was invented. Many of us at PlayStation have dreamed of VR and what it could mean to the gaming community."

However, according to The Verge, Sony will not be releasing the headset this year.
