SYDNEY - Telstra has quietly shelved plans for a cloud-based gaming service for its T-Box set-top boxes saying that the technology is too immature according to an Australian IT report.

Game Over: Telstra T-box Cloud Games

The carrier began trialling the service in 2011 hoping to launch it commercially last year. However this never happened and Telstra has decided to put the whole idea on hold.

"Currently cloud gaming internationally is in its embryonic stages and not yet where it would need to be for us to bring something to our customers" according to a spokesman for the carrier."

If successful Telstra's cloud gaming service could have presented a serious challenge to dedicated gaming hardware makers Sony and Microsoft which would have seen sales of their Xbox and PS3 consoles challenged according to the Oz

Also shelved is a plan for a Telstra-branded all-you-can-eat cloud music service. The spokesman said Telstra's MOG service would remain its key play in the online music market.
