The device that runs Android Jelly Bean delivers direct access to content in the Google Play store but, despite this capability, the device has not been labelled as a Google TV offering.
Inside the device is a 1TB hard drive, a 1.7GHz dual-core CPU and 1GB of RAM along with Bluetooth 4.0, Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi, USB 3.0, micro USB, and an optical audio out. Samsung claim that the device will be launched in Australia in the second half of the year which is when pricing will be announced.
The new device could spell the end for the planned Ice TV box that was tipped for early 2013; it will also put pressure on offerings from digital set top box manufacturers who are struggling to line up content deals.
The new media streamer, which will compete directly against the Apple TV solution, will be capable of delivering movie and music content.
8 users will be able to set-up user accounts for private or shared storage with the device capable of being seen by multiple devices.
