Samsung Rocket Launch Galaxy 4

By Oonagh Reidy | Wednesday | 24/04/2013

5", Eye scroller, S Health, S Translator: Galaxy 4 has hit OZ

It's lighter, bigger and promises to be your best mate.

And Samsung is hoping its shiny, larger 5 inch Full HD Super AMOLED Galaxy S4 will endure its reign as the king of the smartphone world, as other Androids like HTC One, Motorola "X" and LG Optimus G join the race.

Launched at a jam packed, super plush event at the Sydney Opera House last night (cue lights, Samsung robots and Aussie images emblazoned on the House sails), was telling of the Galaxy's newfound leadership in the mobile world.

Samsung is now principal partner of the Sydney icon - in a deal worth millions - as it unveiled S4 with eye scrolling, tools like S Health, S Translator, Airplay (lets you use S4 without even touching it), 13MP camera and local apps including Foxtel GO, Quickflix, Yahoo Plus 7, which it hopes will be another icon in the making.

"Samsung was the number one selling smartphone brand globally in 2012 and we continue to be the number one growing smart phone brand in the world," said Samsung Australia Managing Director and Senior VP, S.R. Yoon, at last night's launch.

"In Australia we've also enjoyed incredible success...thanks to Australians falling in love with the Galaxy range, preference for Samsung continues to grow rapidly."

"This is due to emphasis we placed on innovation" said Yoon, but "with the Galaxy S4 we take it one step further."

Samsung local boss claims "this is the new benchmark in terms of innovation in smartphones in Australia."

"It will break barriers" and "helps you make meaningful connections. Features like S Translator truly breach cultural and language barriers and bring people closer."

"We've thought about how S4 can enhance your life and truly become your life companion."

"I'm confident S4 will delight Australian and strengthen Sam leadership in the marketplace."

Early success indicators like Facebook comments, likes and tweets about the S4 since New York event last month have been "unprecedented" said Samsung's local boss.

Telco partners are also "very excited" about new flagship Galaxy, he said.

"Design to make your life simpler"

On pre sale from today, the 5inch phone costs $899 outright will hit telco shops including Telstra, Optus, Vodafone, Virgin on Saturday, promising to be your best friend or "life companion" as Samsung puts it.

However, it will also be on sale in Samsung Experience Stores and the Koreans have erected a third store called "Galaxy Glasshouse" at the Opera House selling all its Galaxy range from new S4 to new Note 8.0 phablets and Tabs.

Andrew Volard, Director, Telstra Mobile, said the S4 was shaping up to be its most anticipated Android phone launch yet.

Tens of thousands have already registered their interest with Telstra online, he said, proving "there's tremendous appetite for this new smartphone which promises to change the way we answer calls and preview text messages."

"It's these innovative extras, along with the large 5 inch Full HD Super AMOLED screen, 4G connectivity, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system and high quality 13MP camera that has put the Galaxy S4 on the top  of customer's wishlists."

"The GALAXY S4 will be a game changer here in Australia," said Tyler McGee, V P of Telecommunications, Samsung Australia, who said demand has been "phenomenal."
