New Red iPod To Help Aids In Africa

By David Richards | Sunday | 05/11/2006

Apple has released an 8GB red iPod Nano. Due for rlease in Australia this week Apple will donate $10.00 from each sale to the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa.

The Product RED campaign was launched earlier this year by U2 lead singer Bono who is currently touring and Bobby Shriver of the extended Kennedy clan to engage business in the global fight against AIDS in Africa. Some the planet's most recognizable corporations - The Gap, Apple and Motorola among them - have begun offering up uniquely-branded products as part of the scheme.

Bono and American talk show host Oprah Winfrey last month hit the streets of Chicago in a high profile "paint the town red" shopping spree to promote the campaign.

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria was established in 2002 by world leaders, including United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan. Its goal is to increase the fight against three of the planet's most devastating diseases and do so through locally-driven initiatives.

To date, the Global Fund has contributed $5.2 billion to more than 350 programs in 131 countries.

Apple has also begun shipping its new iPod shuffle, a 1-gigabyte unit that holds up to 240 songs on your sleeve.
