New Coloured iPads Tipped For October 15th Launch

By David Richards | Tuesday | 24/09/2013

Apple is set to launch a new iPad range on October 15th that will include coloured models.

Apple's flirt with delivering coloured iPhones seems to be paying off with their new pink iPhone accounting for 46 per cent of sales - almost more than all the other colours combined.

Almost half of iPhone 5C sales are of the pink model, according to iPhoneStock Checker. The blue model is second most-popular, accounting for 32 per cent of 5C sales. In third place is green, at 12 per cent, followed by white at 9 per cent and yellow brings up the rear, accounting for just 1 per cent of sales.

According to Fairfax Media Apple is not faring well selling their cheap "overpriced" iPhone 5C with telco carriers reporting "slow" sales.

While Apple claims they have sold more than 9 million iPhones in three days carriers are reporting a different story.

Fairfax Media spoke with staff and managers of several large telco stores in Sydney and other regions of NSW earlier this week and found many had sold less than five of the 5c model since Friday, with some failing to sell any.

A survey by the research firm Localytics said the more expensive iPhone 5s was outselling the 5c in the US market by a margin of more than three to one, and by a five-to-one margin in Japan. In Australia the research appears to show the 5s outselling the 5c by an eleven-to-one margin.

"This makes sense, since those who feel the need to buy a new device the very weekend it launches are most likely the power users who want the highest-end phone experience," said Localytics analyst Bernd Leger in a blog post.

"It's not altogether clear whether poorer countries are buying more 5c's compared to 5s's, but it will be good to keep a close eye on this data in the next few days to see if there is any pattern emerging."

Now insiders are talking up the imminent arrival of a second-generation iPad mini as well as an iPad 5.

Apple is rumoured to gearing up to launch an iPad 5 and an iPad mini 2, on 15 October. The latest leaked images from technology site Tactus, allegedly show the rear shell of the iPad 5, pictured, with brightly coloured cases.

It's likely the iPad mini 2 will keep the current 7.9-inch screen and not drop to 7-inches, in a bid to stay slightly bigger than Google's Nexus 7 and Tesco's new Hudl.

If Apple adds the Retina display seen on its new iPhones and larger iPads, it's possible the second-generation iPad mini will be heavier and thicker.

However, leaked photos of casing suggest it will be thinner - suggesting Apple will wait to add the high-definition display to later models.

According to Apple site, 9to5Mac, the rumoured iPad 5 will also keep the 9.7-inch, high-resolution screen seen on older models.

The camera is due an upgrade and is rumoured to move to an 8MP rear-facing lens, with the possibility of even a 12MP camera being added.
