Moto targets the mobile underclass, giving consumers a viable option - for one third of the price of an iPhone, Samsung S4 and Co.
Moto G, annouced today, it has a sharp 4.5" HD display (best in class), all-day battery, and a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, just like the pricey phones, thank you very much.
It will sell for $179 in the US. Moto CEO Dennis Woodside declared war on pricey rivals, saying G has "premium experience at less than 1/3 the price of high-end phones and out performs most of those devices".
But no word on Aussie availability, yet. Moto G hits emerging markets first - Brazil this week and Europe, Latin America, Canada and parts of Asia in the next few weeks.
The most up to date Android of any phone in its class runs Android 4.3 Jellybean with guaranteed upgrade to Android 4.4 KitKat at the beginning of 2014.
Moto G sports a colourful back like the iPhone 5c, including red, with 19 customization options, including interchangeable Motorola Shells and Flip Shells in seven colors as well as Grip Shells.
"The smartphone industry has relegated hundreds of millions of smartphone buyers to second-class status, preventing them from experiencing the mobile Internet at its best," Moto said in a blog.

The $179 Moto phone won't land in US, India, the Middle East and Asia until early January, but will be sold in more than 30 countries by 2014.
Moto G will be sold on Motorola.com, with no contract, for USD$179 with 8GB of storage and USD$199 for 16GB, in the US.
