REVEALED: OZ Most Popular Phones

iPhone 5S is the best selling smartphone in Australia.

New Kantar Worldpanel ComTech figures seen by CN, show the Apple iPhone 5S was the best selling smartphone in Australia for the three months to December 31.

This is followed in second place by Samsung Galaxy S 4, and surprisingly, Apple iPhone 5C, as well as older models Samsung Galaxy S III and iPhone 4S, all making it into the top 5.

Older models are often reinvigorated by a new release, which appears to be the case with both the  iPhone and Samsung S3, with retailers flogging older models cheaper.

Apple released the iPhones 5s and 5c last year, although 5c was believed to be largely a flop.

In spite of iPhone 5s being the best seller last qr, Apple's marketshare actually fell 3% to 35%. Yesterday, it announced it sold 51 million iPhones during Oct-Dec.

Google's Android OS still dominates the Aussie smartphone scene, accounting for 57% of all phones sold in Q4, up 1%.

On the Android front, the top 5 sellers were all Samsung's although Sony Xperia Z did get a look in at No. 5 in Q4 2013.

The top 'Droid sellers were: Samsung Galaxy S 4, Galaxy S III, S 4 Mini, Note III and Sony Xperia Z.

But after years of accelerated growth, Samsung is now coming under real pressure in most regions, globally, says Comtech analysts with cheaper Android models entering the market with competitive devices.

Microsoft Windows Phone platform also grew to 5% in Australia last quarter, but growth has dropped in recent months, pulled back by successes of iPhone 5s.

BlackBerry had a horrific quarter and now accounts for less than 1% of phones sold.
