JBL Unveil Distinctive Studio 5 Speakers

By Tony Ibrahim | Tuesday | 04/12/2012

JBL has announced its Studio 5 Series of loudspeakers and subwoofers. The distinctive range consists of 3 floor-standing speakers, a pair of bookshelf speakers, a centre-channel loudspeaker and a subwoofer. Customers can use these speakers to form a stereo setup varied between 2 or 7 channels.

Each Studio 5 Series loudspeaker uses a high-frequency compression driver with a Bi-radial horn to deliver realistic sound at high-impact volumes.

The speakers are distinguished by JBL's angular styling, but we apreciate the Picasso take.

The CEO of Australian distributor Convoy International, Geoff Matthews, believes JBL's Studio 5 Series are ripe for today's entertainment needs because of their compatibility with a range of devices.

"A speaker system today must do more than just play music, as consumers look for dynamic sound from all of their entertainment devices, whether that comes from audio/video receivers, Blu-ray players, HDTVs and gaming consoles," said Matthews.

"The JBL Studio 5 Series provides the flexibility to build a great sound system everyone can appreciate, whether in the family room, a dedicated home theatre or a dedicated listening room for audiophiles. The JBL Studio 5 Series is a great reflection of JBL's renowned audio craftsmanship."

Each speaker in the range includes cast frame woofers, heavy duty spiked feet and bi-wire capable connections. Studio 5 models will be available in a Black or Cherry finish.

A breakdown of these speakers follows as per the official press release.

The JBL Studio 5 series includes:

JBL Studio 520C, $599 - The Studio 520C center-channel speaker is designed for a traditional home theatre arrangement. The centre channel speaker includes dual 100mm (4") low-frequency transducers featuring stiff, lightweight PolyPlas cones with rubber surrounds, 25mm (1") diameter woofer voice coils, a 25mm (1") high-frequency compression driver, a glass-filled ABS Bi-Radial high-frequency horn and a 16mm (5/8") MDF enclosure. The Studio 520C has a recommended amplifier power of 150 watts.

JBL Studio 530, $999 per pair, sold as a pair - The bookshelf Studio 530 speakers are ideal for a smaller listening room or a home theatre in the master bedroom. The speakers include 130mm (5-1/4") low-frequency transducers, stiff, lightweight PolyPlas cones with rubber surrounds, 37mm (1-1/2") diameter woofer voice coils, a 25mm (1") high-frequency compression driver, a glass-filled ABS Bi-Radial high-frequency horn and a 19mm (3/4") MDF enclosure. The Studio 530 loudspeakers have a recommended amplifier power of 125 watts.

JBL Studio 570, $1,499 per pair - The moderately-proportioned Studio 570 is the smallest of three floorstanding loudspeakers in the Studio 5 range. It maximizes the benefits of deep bass and expansive soundstage shared with its larger siblings without visually dominating the average-sized living space. It may look smaller but you will feel like you are listening to true full-range speaker in the JBL tradition. Two low-frequency transducers measure 130mm and the PolyPlas cones feature SFG magnetic structures and rubber surrounds. The high-frequency transducer includes a 25mm high-frequency compression driver with neodymium and a one-piece Teonex diaphragm on a glass-filled ABS Bi-Radial high-frequency horn. The Studio 570 loudspeaker has a recommended amplifier power of 150 watts.

JBL Studio 580, $1,999 per pair - At over 1m tall, the Studio 580 floorstanding loudspeaker is a direct descendant of JBL's most advanced residential systems and will impress audiophiles - and their guests - with a performance reminiscent of a live show. Two low-frequency transducers measure 165mm and the PolyPlas cones feature SFG magnetic structures and rubber surrounds. The high-frequency transducer includes a 25mm high-frequency compression driver with neodymium and a one-piece Teonex diaphragm on a glass-filled ABS Bi-Radial high-frequency horn. The Studio 580 loudspeaker has a recommended amplifier power of 200 watts.

JBL Studio 590, $2,499 per pair - At over 1.2 m tall, the Studio 590 is a true reflection of the vision JBL Chief Engineer Greg Timbers brought to the JBL Studio 5 Series and delivers an accurate, powerful and lifelike performance for movies and music. Two low-frequency transducers measure 200mm and the PolyPlas cones feature SFG magnetic structures, cast frames and rubber surrounds. The high-frequency transducer includes a 25mm high-frequency compression driver with neodymium and a one-piece Teonex diaphragm on a glass-filled ABS Bi-Radial high-frequency horn. The Studio 590 loudspeaker has a recommended amplifier power of 250 watts.

JBL Studio 550P $1,199 - The Studio 550P subwoofer rounds out the range with commanding and powerful bass and is equally at home in both multi channel theatre systems and 2.1 channel stereo systems. Studio 550P features a front-firing  250mm PolyPlas low frequency transducer, driven by a built-in 300 watts amplifier, mounted in a sealed enclosure to ensure extra control and precision.
