Two Canadian inventors launch home 3D scanner for $599. Indiegogo crowd-funding campaign reached over 4 times its original goal of $81K and is currently at $403, 847 and counting.

Canadians Launch World's First Affordable Home 3D Scanner.

The Photon 3D scanner is claimed to "take a physical object and turn it into a digital 3D model on your computer."

Using dual laser technology, the object rotates 360 degrees as a camera takes HD pictures and then uses software to create a 3D model in as little as 3 minutes.

Amidst growing excitement about 3D printing, the Photon allows owners to make personalised items, with existing files in the marketplace currently only providing models that others have created.

Once the model is created it can be further personalised or edited and then reproduced on a 3D printer to create copies, used in animations or 3D designs, or saved into a digital archive.

Backers of the project include key industry names such as Chris Anderson (Wired), Bre Pettis (Makerbot), and Diego Porqueras, owner of the Deezmaker 3D printer retail store and designer of the forthcoming "Bukito" 3D printer.
"I'm a backer-it looks really promising," Porqueras told Ars Technica. "We're definitely keeping an eye out for that."

Launched by Canadian company Matterform, the $81K target was reached within its first week and provides rewards for contributions including your very own Photon Scanner for $599, 10 Photon Scanners for $5, 490 and a private dinner with the team for you and a friend at the launch party and a signed and engraved Photon Scanner package for $10, 000.

The company has not yet released information about when they will sell the scanner on their own official website after the campaign or how much they will be selling it for - but it's likely it will be more expensive than the special intro prices on the Indiegogo campaign, and will definitely be shipping later.
