REVEALED: 'Worlds Largest' 4K TV @ CES '14

By Oonagh Reidy | Tuesday | 07/01/2014

Samsung 4K is about to go curved. And very, very big.

Samsung throws down gauntlet for Curved and Ultra HD TV's at CES today, revealing what it claims is the worlds first (and largest) 105" Ultra High Def (4K) Curved TV, that boasts 11 million pixels.

Rival LG's also today unveiled a Curved ULTRA HD TV (105UC9) 105-inch screen with a 21:9 aspect ratio, 5120 x 2160 resolution, so the 'worlds largest' Curved UHD title is not Samsung's alone.

But that's not all.

Samsung went for a double whammy at CES 2014 - revealing the largest UHD TV screen in the world - measuring an eye watering 110 inches  This title is definitely Samsung's - LG only managed a 98" version.

This follows on from Samsung's first ever Curved TV - an OLED screen - currently on sale in Oz.

Unveiled at CES just moments ago, the Koreans have also just revealed a slew of new (curved and flat) UHD TV's including: U9000 Curved UHD Series (78", 65" and 55" screens), and six new flat 4K sets - 75", 65", 60'', 55" and 50".

Hell, it has even curved the flagship Full HD H8000 LED TV series, as the Curved TV war enters the next phase.

Samsung say its new TV line up sets the pace for innovation, as it goes head to head with arch rival LG, who announced 15 new TV's at CES, including OLEDs, UHDs, LEDs and Plasma. LG TV will be the first in Australia to legally deliver Netflix with 4K streaming of the TV show House Of Cards, the CEO of Netflix told Smarthouse.

(Incidentally, LG has just cut the price of its Curved OLED TV here in Oz by several thousand dollars - they are now sell for $7,999 down from $12K).

"Following last year's strong introduction of Samsung UHD TV, in 2014 Samsung will drive industry growth through tremendous innovation in UHD picture quality, breakthrough design and consumer choice," said HS Kim, executive vice president of visual display, Samsung.

Ultra High Def, known as 4K, boasts four times the resolution and pixels of Full HD and is hailed as the next big thing in TV, despite the high price and relative lack of content.

All Samsung's new UHD TV's have UHD Upscaling, support standards -- including HEVC, HDMI 2.0, MHL 3.0 and HDCP 2.2, and are future-ready, with Samsung's UHD Evolution Kit, which should encourage some doubters towards 4K.

As 4K content is still elusive, Samsung has announced new UHD 'ecosystem' partnering up with Amazon, M-GO, Netflix, and US cable TV provider Comcast.

Movies and docos will also be '4K-ed' with a new partnership with studios including 20th Century Fox and Paramount Pictures, sold by Samsung as a UHD Video Pack.

More to follow.
