Some 1.3 million digital television set top box receivers and integrated digital TV sets have now sold to retailers and installers in Australia, 49 percent of them sold in the 2005 calendar year.
According to Digital Broadcasting Australia (DBA) figures supplied by industry researcher GfK, the average monthly sales of digital TV receivers during the December 2005 quarter was 72,600 units, compared to 42,500 units for the same period in 2004. DBA points out that a certain amount of sales to retailers are held in inventory, which DBA estimates to be around 75,000 receivers.
The association also believes that around 50,000 free-to-view digital television homes have more than one free-to-view digital TV receiver. This makes the home take-up is around 1.2 million or 15.5 percent of Australia’s homes.
