First it was the Porsche mobile phone, now we have a a turbocharged Porsche torch that has a battery that will last 20 years.
Designed by Porsche and launched at the 2010 CES in Las Vegas, the new torch, which will cost over $350 in Australia when it goes on sale, features a new kind of battery designed to deliver “power on command”, providing enough battery power to run the torch for two hours, even if the main batteries run flat. The mPower Reserve Battery retains a full charge for at least 20 years, and immediately runs at full power.
“The combination of the sleek, cutting edge design by the Porsche Design Studio and the unique ‘first of its kind’ emergency capabilities make the mPower Emergency Illuminator an extraordinary consumer product,” said Ron Durando, chief executive of mPower Technology. “The Illuminator is perfect for anyone who values sophisticated engineering and pioneering technology.”
The reserve battery is activated by twisting the cap at the end of the torch until a snap is heard when the internal barrier is broken. That enables liquid electrolytes to come in to contact with the battery’s solid electrodes, firing it to life.
The torch also features a USB connection, which means it can double as a portable charger, recharging devices such as mobile phones.
