Qantas will offer free Wi-Fi on all domestic flights from next year, the company confirmed yesterday.

The service will capture signals from NBN’s Sky Muster satellite, already in orbit and able to deliver a signal to every corner of Australia and territorial islands. Sky Muster is expected to become operational in April. It is to be joined by a second Sky Muster next year.

Qantas will fit all of its domestic A330s and B737 aircraft with modems and antennas able to receive signals from the satellite. ViaSat, a US company which has offices in Sydney and Canberra, will provide connectivity between the Qantas aircraft and satellite and ground stations.

The airline said it is also looking at how to enable high-speed Wi-Fi for international and regional travellers.
