A big increase in plasma sales and rechargeable batteries for use in notebooks has seen Samsung SDI report a 17% rise in second-quarter profits despite lower sales.

The world’s second-largest maker of rechargeable batteries after Sanyo the Company is tipping a 41% increase in sales in the third quarter after a decrease in sales of 6%.

“Demand in the second half is rising faster than expected due to strong restocking demand from its customers on top of strong seasonality,” said Lee Jong-wook, an analyst at Samsung Securities.

Mr. Lee said the company would have a strong operating profit in the third quarter as demand for so-called active-matrix organic light-emitting diodes, or AM OLEDs, used in flat-panel screens, and for rechargeable batteries used in hybrid electric vehicles is looking solid.

Samsung SDI said revenue from its plasma-display panel division rose 23% to 500 billion won from the previous quarter because of increased demand for larger displays.
