EXCLUSIVE: Sonos, who has grown over 100% during the past 12 months in Australia, is set to hook up with Sony Music in the delivery of a new music site that will give Australian consumers access to over 2 million music tracks for as cheap as $12.95 a month.
Anabus.fm is a music streaming and download service that will deliver high quality MP3 files to a Sonos music system.
Sonos makes wireless home audio systems such as the Zone Player S5 and Sonos iPod dock. Next year, users who use the new music streaming service, will be able to create their own playlists, while also creating their own channel. Owners of an Apple iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad will be able to access the content by downloading a Sonos application that integrates with their Sonos hardware.
According to Sony Music sources there are a number of different membership plans including a Premium membership program that allows subscribers to stream any song in full length via a Sonos device or via a web site. The core benefits of the new service are: Unlimited full length streaming, access to 2 million tracks with this rising to close to 4 million in 2011.
Music from Sony Music, Universal, EMI Warner and key independent labels will be available on the new service which is expected to launch in February 2011.
During the past 12 months the Sonos brand has grown over 100% in Australia according to Niv Novak the CEO of Playback Systems who distributes the brand in Australia.
His growth which has primarily cone via the specialist Hi Fi and home installation channel is expected to continue into 2011 as new streaming channels are made available to Sonos owners.
According to Novak only 3% of his revenue is via the mass channel which is primarily a distribution deal that Playback Systems cut earlier this year with JB Hi Fi who is now trialling Sonos systems in their stores.
“Sonos has growth 100% both globally and in Australia and a lot of this is attributable to the ease by which a Sonos system can be set up. Consumers want Wireless systems and the want easy access to digital content” said Novak.
“We have the best iPhone, iPad applications in this category and this is proving extremely popular and we are seen as a category leader. The introduction in 2011 of new services will see us grow even further in Australia” said Novak.
According to Len Wallis, the CEO of Len Wallis Audio in Sydney and a major seller of Sonos Systems, the reason for the brands success is simplicity. “Sonos Systems are easy to sell because they deliver a good customer experience. They are easy to install and easy to use and the fact that they have good iPhone and iPad applications also helps”.
Another product tipped for 2011 from Sonos, is a home Theatre System with several insiders tipping that it will be revealed at the 2011 CES show in Las Vegas.
Indication of this comes from a job posting on Sonos’ website that seeks to fill the Senior Product Manager, Home Theatre Sound position.
