Sony is getting in your face with 3D, soon to be introducing 3D viewing headsets with in-built sound and displays.
The ‘Personal 3D Viewer’ or HMZ-T1 is a grey and black visor with two small displays that sit a few centimetres ahead of each eye, sitting over the head like a pair of high-tech goggles.
The two 1.8 centimetre OLED displays act like current stereoscopic 3D televisions by creating the 3D illusions by showing each eye a different image to create depth. Early testers have said that this system eliminates some of the eye fatigue and distortion of current 3D TVs.
Aaron Levine, product marketing manager for Sony in the US where the headsets will soon debut, says that having the screens so close one’s eyes “gives you a feeling of a 150-inch television.”
The headsets also include stereo sound to complete the viewing experience, and all up weigh under 500 grams though are quite bulky, and not suited for children (not just because of the size, but also the health risks associated with infant vision).
These personal viewers connect to a Blu-ray player, 3D-ready console or other media content box via HDMI to play content direct to the viewer, whether it be HD movies or gaming. It accepts 5.1 channel sound, but is limited to 720p resolution.
The soon-to-debut headsets will run at US$799 this November.
