Reasonably priced smartphone has excellent specs.Quad core 5.5″ HTC Desire 816 is the first of a new breed of mid-range smartphones to be released this year.
The Taiwanese phone maker is flagging the performance and value of its new phones, as it reveals the first member of the new-look Desire family, to be sold exclusively at Optus.
The new Desire is definitely good value for the specs – it costs $398 outright or on Optus plans from $40, $50 and $60, $100.
HTC says the 816 is “one of the best value smartphones yet.”
So whats it got?
5.5″ HD screen quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 1.6 GHz processor, dual BoomSound front speakers, two cameras – 13MP rear-facing Zoe camera with automatic highlight videos, 5MP front camera. You can also edit video clips before sharing and both cameras capture video in Full HD.

Its also got optional NFC to pair with other devices, 8GB storage, 1.5GB RAM and runs Android KitKat 4.4 OS.
Its got a premium metal design, 4G connectivity (support APAC700 band/ faster LTE CAT-4), allowing up to 150MBps download speeds.
This new Desire also has HTC BlinkFeed which is a continuous live feed of news, social network updates and other info on the homescreen. Many of the specs of 816 are found on HTC’s top end One M8 device.
