Harvey Norman will this afternoon start selling the Hewlett Packard Web OS TouchPad tablet for $98.
The sale which starts at 2pm is expected to shift 4800 units of the discontinued device by 5.00PM after news of the dramatic discount spread across news outlets. It’s not known whether the device can be loaded with another operating system such as the Android OS offered by Google.
HP has said that they will fund the fire sale after the device was dramatically dumped by HP a week after going on sale.
Harvey Norman’s Ben McIntosh said all TouchPad accessories will be sold at half price according to the Australian newspaper.
Mr McIntosh, the general manager of Harvey Norman’s computers and communications division, told the News Ltd site that the units would be available in all Harvey Norman stores until sold out.
The decision to slash the TouchPad’s local price follows similar heavy discounting in the US on the weekend.
Mr McIntosh said he was “very happy” that HP Australia had recognised the need to strike an arrangement following its decision last week in the US to axe the tablet.
