Dick Smith is looking to bulk up sales by spruiking Father’s Day purchases that are often made at the last minute versus days out for mothers. In 2009 the most popular item was a 46″ Sanyo TV claims the retailer.A recent research study conducted by the mass retailer reveals that the final Thursday, Friday and Saturday before Father’s Day will see sales of consumer technology products peak by up to 20 per cent if 2009 sales trends are repeated.
The retailer claims that families who leave it late to buy tend to spend up big on big-ticket home entertainment systems, LED TVs and games consoles or practical gifts like GPS units, portable hard drives and digital radios.

“Dads shouldn’t fear a last minute dodgy buy, as families who leave it late to buy tend to spend up big” claims Rodney Balech, Business Manager – Audio Visual at Dick Smith.
“‘Practical’ Dad gifts like GPS units, portable hard-drives and digital radios are the most popular consumer technology items in the final three days. Big-ticket items including home entertainment systems, LED TVs and games consoles started to peak in the two weeks prior,” said Craig Murphy, Marketing Services Manager at Dick Smith.
The top six best-selling items in the 2009 Father’s Day period at Dick Smith were:
1. Sanyo 46 inch Full HD LCD TV
2. Navman MY50T In-Car GPS
3. Toshiba Satellite Notebook PC
4. Western Digital 1 TB Portable Hard Drive
5. Fujifilm FinePrix S1600 Ultra Zoom
6. Bush Digital Radio with PPL FM Tuner
Predictions for 2010 best sellers will see TVs, gaming consoles and notebook computers remain top of the list.
“Being so close to the footy final series, Father’s Day brings a significant rise in sales of LED, LCD and Plasma TVs,” said
“LED TVs are a relatively new technology in the market but are a great all round format and suitable for viewing Dad’s on-the-box favourites from sports to movies and games. We expect these will continue to be a popular option this Father’s Day, particularly the 32 inch category which is the ideal size for most Dad’s homes and lounge rooms,” Balech said.
Gaming has also become a popular family activity, with the major gaming console manufacturers introducing motion control to their platforms this year and Dick Smith predicts increased interest in this category.
“Father’s Day purchases aren’t just for Dad. Gaming has become an activity enjoyed by the whole family, making interactive consoles an ideal choice at this time of year. We also have some great package deals available in store on consoles including Nintendo Wii,” said Dave McKenzie, Gaming Business Manager, Dick Smith.
