Supermarket chain Aldi has reportedly withdrawn a range of hard drives from its stores after the hardware was infected with malware following a report by Queensland University-based Internet watchdog AusCert.The device – described as a $99 grey-label external four-in-one device which combined a hard drive with a DVD, USB and card reader – has reportedly been pulled from Aldi shelves. It is no longer being listed on Aldi Australia’s Web site of weekly specials.
An AusCert advisory bulletin issued late last week claimed the drive was infected with the Conficker virus.
“The malware is extremely old, with some of the malware being seen since August 2008,” AusCert said.
It added”: “This is fortunate in one sense that most systems should detect this malware if they have antivirus installed. If you have purchased one of these, it mightn’t hurt to format the HDD in the 4-in-1 device as well as scan your computer with up-to-date anti-virus software.”
AusCert presumably means to re-format the HDD.
