Word is we are going to get to see this in the flesh at theCeBIT Europe Show, but LCD TV panel supplier Chi Mei Optoelectronics has turned out something so impressive we had to tell you about it ahead of schedule.
What it has done is create a 56in flat screen television sporting an unbelievable 3840 x 2140 resolution and 8.29m pixels. Known as Quad Full High Definition (QFHD) this is a new record and creates a picture four times higher than the 1920 x 1080 high definition displays creeping their way onto the market now. For the record, it also sports a 1000:1 contrast ratio and luminance of 600nits.
Over 24.8m million transistors were used in the creation of their monster, though with a data transmission speed in excess of 1.4GB per second just try finding native content for this bad boy… That said, company CEO Jau-Yang Ho rather sensibly points out its first installations will be in industry with uses in medical video display and satellite pictures.
He also pushed the quality over size argument as the main battle facing manufacturers in the coming years: “In the future, LCD screen size alone will no longer be the technical threshold nor the development focus of display panel makers,” he explained. “From now on, all LCD manufacturers must shift to increasing the consumer experience on LCD display by using greater screen resolution and more advanced technology.” And so say all of us.
Now after reading all this you may be thinking “Great, but who is this Chi Mei bunch anyway?” Well, you’ll be pleased to hear the company is actually the third largest panel supplier in the world and has contracts with the likes of Sharp. Ho also said he hopes to have the screen on sale by Q3 next year with a price tag of around $10,000.
