Amazon, today has announced a brand new Lord of the Rings television series. All the beloved classic characters from JRR Tolkien’s classic fantasy novels will be making their first television appearances.
Amazon has committed to a multi-series adaptation of Lord of the Rings. The streaming service has committed to this and may be continuing with a spin-off series if this first one is successful.
Amazon will be exploring new story lines that proceed the Lord of the Rings books. Amazon studios will produce the new series in cooperation with New Line Cinema, the Tolkien Estate and HaperCollins.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, this new project comes as Amazon attempts to find a potential challenger to HBO’s Game of Thrones series. As well as establish a big-name franchise given the company’s list of poorly received scripted programs.
