EXCLUSIVE: Giant US online retailer Amazon and UK high street retailer John Lewis have moved to expand their Australian online business during the past week with Amazon opening an application store for Australian users and John Lewis offering products like the new Sonos Play 3 wireless music system for sub $400 along with an extensive range of digital cameras and IT products.
Amazon has also expanded their range of IT and consumer electronics products that Australians can buy from their site.
The new app store that appears to have gone live over the past weekend went live in the USA earlier this year. The app store offers free “marquee apps” every day as well as apps like the $0.99 Angry Birds apps that the Company claims is “Ad free”.
During a test earlier today we were able to access several; of the apps.
Last week when we tried logging into the Amazon app store geographical restrictions were still in place when we tried to download apps.
The site offers Android users the chance to test drive apps on their PC prior to making a purchase.
Analysts claim that the international launch of the Amazon app store would certainly assist Amazon’s aim to grow their business in International markets like Australia. They say it will cut in on the Goggle Android Market’s dominance while setting up the Company to in the future, offer both music and movie downloads direct to multiple devices.
Earlier today, UK High Street retailer John Lewis confirmed that they are now shipping into Australia. The Company plan to range more than 155,000 items online that Australian consumers can buy.
Among those products is Sony’s new tablet range, the Sonos Play 3 and a range of new digital cameras including the latest from Olympus, Canon and Panasonic.
The site www.johnlewis.com/Australia already has a high prominence on Google. Shipping to Australia is fifteen pounds or A$23.
The store has almost all of the main products ranged by Harvey Norman electrical at prices significantly cheaper than the same products sold by Harvey Norman in Australia.
Also set to expand their operations into Australia in coming weeks is UK retail store Next, who is already offering Android Tablet PCs for sub $300 along with an extensive range of Samsung, LG and Panasonic home theatres, Apple product and IT products.
John Lewis believes that Australia is fertile ground, due to the large expat British population in Australia and because they already have an extensive International online operation which is selling across Europe and the Middle East.
John Lewis executives said recently: “This is about us being confident there will be real demand from the expat market.”
John Lewis who had revenues of $13.3 Billion dollars last year said recently that they are seeking 20 partners to join a new sourcing office in Delhi to build its logistics and supply chain into the Asia Pacific region.
The John Lewis stores primarily focus on home, electrical and home technology products.
