It’s PC upgrade season following the release of new Intel processors and Apple is the latest vendor to roll out a new offering.
With decidedly less fanfare than it gave the iPhone 6s and MacBook, Apple quietly announced updates to its iMac line. The 21.5-inch model will now have a Retina 4K display (9.4 million pixels) with Intel graphics, while the 27-inch will have a Retina 5K display (14.7 million pixels) with AMD graphics.
For processors, the 27-inch iMac has a sixth-gen Intel Core, but the 21.5-inch steps down to the fifth-gen Intel Core.
Both feature two Thunderbolt 2 ports, four USB 3.0 ports, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and 8GB or 16GB of memory.
Storage options include a 1TB hard drive or Apple’s Fusion drives that combine a hard drive with flash storage.
Apple also launched new accessories: The Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse 2 and Magic Trackpad 2, all with rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Apple has reduced the footprint of the Magic Mouse and increased the surface of the Trackpad. The latter also features Force Touch for added interactivity.
Apple said the accessories will last “about a month or more” on a full charge. The iMacs will come with the new mouse and keyboard.
