Now that Apple is finally bringing the iPhone to Australia, it seems it is also looking for an iPhone Field Validation Engineer here and it wants someone with “technical understanding and experience with GSM/GPRS, Edge, CDMA and UMTS”.

Those were the words on a job ad posted on the company’s website, with the position based in Sydney, where the successful candidate will work with telcos to gain their approval for the iPhone to be used on their networks, as well as being charged with investigating connectivity issues reported by carriers’ customers and field operatives.
The reference to UMTS may appear to point to a 3G iPhone, but oddly, it is not listed as a ‘must have’ attribute. What Apple does insist is essential is the “testing and debug of GSM communications systems” and “experience in field testing and knowledge of interworking of cellular carriers”.
