A number of Chinese apps appearing on Apple’s Store have been infected with malicious software, exposing a rare vulnerability in Apple’s mobile platform.

The applications were apparently infected after software developers were lured into using an unauthorised and compromised version of Apple’s developer tool kit.

The attack has affected more than three dozen apps, according to US-based cybersecurity firm Palo Alto Networks.

They include Tencent Holdings’s mobile chat app WeChat, Uber-like car-hailing app Didi Kuaidi, and a Spotify-like music app from Internet portal NetEase.

The problem comes at a time when Apple is launching its Apple Pay into the Chinese market, registering an entity in the Shanghai free-trade zone.
