Germany headphone Company Sennheiser has introduced a brand new pair of headphones that deliver sound at a slight angle giving the music a more spatial feel, similar to the effect created by a pair of stereo speakers. Some are already saying that these are the best ever new headphones.
Launched at CES 2009 the HD 800 is already heading for stardom with journalist praising their quality and design.
The new headphones come with a completely new ear-cup design that is very large in order to create a comfortable over-the-ear fit. The ear-cups also sit incredibly lightly over the ears, and there are no problems with your ears getting hot or your skin sweating – in fact it’s easy to forget that you’re even wearing the HD 800s once you close your eyes and immerse yourself in the music.
The standout component in the HD800s is a 56mm sound transducer – currently the largest available in dynamic headphones.
Sennheiser has also made the vibrating part of the diaphragm a ring, rather than a circular surface, in order to eliminate unwanted distortion at the high end that can occur with a large surface area transducer. The transducer is also mounted in stainless steel gauze to avoid any partial vibrations.
The HD 800s which looks the part is made of bare steel construction and completely open back design. Pricing for Australia is not known but it is expected to be over $2,000.
In a test of the new headphones at the CES launch and even though the show floor at CES is hardly the best environment for auditioning high-end, open back headphones the sound produced by the HD 800s was stunning, and very smooth on the ears and I will even go as far as saying that these headphone will be hard to beat and will fast become a very popular headphone.

Sennheiser has created something truly wonderful with the HD 800s and when I am back in Australia I want to sit down ad try them with a really good Hi Fi system.
