The stellar sales figure for the world’s No. 1 phone maker comes just 100 days after it released the flagship Galaxy S3 on Android 4.0, which features a 4.8″ Super AMOLED screen, 1.4GHz quad core processor and 8MP camera.
This has been a stellar season for the Korean giant who shipped over 90.4m phones -‘dumb’ and smartphones – in Q2, according to analyst Gartner. Apple sold almost 20m iPhones in the same period.
But sales of the Galaxy S3 could have been even higher but was hit by supply issues, Gartner said in its latest report.
“The Galaxy S3 was the best-selling Android product in the quarter and could have been higher but for product shortages.”
Samsung said in July it had sold 10 million S3s but it looks like sales picked up with a lack of new releases from Apple and other ‘Droids although this will change next week, when the next iPhone, dubbed “iPhone 5” is unveiled.
Sale of the new flagship Galaxy outpaced sales of the S2 three times, and Galaxy S six times.
Samsung now expects the latest Galaxy series to surpass total sales of all prior models.
Breaking down the figures by region, 6 million S3s were sold in Europe – its most popular region – , 4.5m in Asia, 4m in the US and 2.5m in its native Korea.
Rivals Nokia, the former No. 1 phone company, and Google-owned Motorola unveiled some swanky new devices yesterday, although analysts say the Finnish brand in particular will have its work cut out to beat Apple and Android.
