A big TV war is set to break out in Australia with several vendors set to deliver a new generation of large TVs that are over 70 inches .In September, Samsung is set to roll out a new 75″ HD TV in Australia in a move that could put pressure on Sharp who recently launched a 70″ model for $4,199 and is now planning to have an 80″ model in stores soon.
LG is also set to launch both a large model TV and an OLED TV by October.
Unlike the Sharp TV, the new Samsung model will come packed with the latest TV technology including an upgradable processor and “stunning new display” according to Phil Newton, director at Samsung Electronics Australia.
According to Mark Beard, the Marketing Director at Sharp, the move to larger TVs is being driven by low margin in smaller sized TVs.
“Margin has been eroded from the smaller TV market and our move into the 70″ and shortly the 80″ market will see us offering an excellent high end display TV for under $5,000″ he said
The new TV will not feature Samsung’s Super High Definition 4K technology; however, we have been told that it could have a brand new interface that is being designed to better streamline content and application access.
The top end model is expected to retail for close to $10,000.
The 200Hz Samsung D9500 will incorporate shutter 3D technology and will house a single pane of glass that goes all the way to the edge giving it a larger look than 75”.
Shown on the Samsung stand at the 2012 CES show in Las Vegas the new TV will be launched in Australia in September.
