
Big W who recently undertook a major restructure of their retail operation, which included an expansion of their consumer electronics category is set to take on the mass CE retailers and Aldi after snaring access to the Philips TV range.
This will see the Company launch a Philips 55” 43” and 49” Range based on the 6800 Philips TV platform. Big W will also launch a 32” Philips 5200 series TV.
Recently Aldi sold more than 8,000 58” UHD TV’s over a weekend. These TV’s came with a free 4K Google Chromecast dongle.
The new Philips range at Big W come with Android TV built in.
A longtime player, in the consumer electronics market Big W was in the past the #1 retailer of gaming, video and music content. This was before JB Hi Fi became a major retail force.
They were also the #1 retailer of Apple iPads.
During the past 12 months, the Company has been gaining lost ground with several consumer electronics suppliers to Big W telling ChannelNews that they are currently witnessing an expansion in orders for consumer electronic products from the mass retailer who last week reported a $160M loss.
One of the men spearheading the expansion of BIG W’s CE business is Taren Singh who has been credited by suppliers as “bringing new life” back into the category with brands such as Philips, JVC, LG and Sony.
The sub $1,000 Philips 55”6800 Series 4K Ultra High Definition Android TV is according to observers, set to be popular due in part to its European heritage.
This TV is extremely stylish and delivers four times the resolution of a conventional Full HD TV.
Powered by a Quad Core engine it has Android built in this gives a user access to Google Play content including both movies, TV Series and music content.
The Philips Pixel Plus Ultra HD engine, optimizes picture quality to deliver smooth, images detail and depth, gamers will immediately notice sharper 4K images with brighter whites and blacker blacks because of this engine.
Owners also get access to Cloud Gaming and an online catalogue of high quality games.
To access this content all you do is pick a game and play on your TV using the universal USB gaming control that comes with the TV, this allows one to easily navigate and play games.
Also built into this TV is the new video standard High Dynamic Range Plus. This technology delivers brighter highlights, greater contrast, and a broader range of colours to the screen.
There is also HEVC support for 4k broadcast and Micro Dimming Pro.
Micro Dimming Pro optimizes the contrast on your TV based on the lighting conditions of your room. Combined with its special software that analyzes the picture in 6400 different zones, it can adjust contrast and image quality for a true lifelike visual experience – day or night.
While Philips doesn’t quite have the same popularity and fame as LG, Samsung, or Sony their range and quality in 4K TV models is nothing to sneeze at.
The new Big W TV’s do comply with the UHD Alliance’s HDR 10 standard set by both Amazon Instant Video HDR content and Ultra HD Blu-ray movie content in the new dynamic range format.
The new Philips TV’s are distributed by Tempo who also supply Big W with the Polaroid TV range.
