Bulletstorm Revives One-Player FPS With Boots, Whips & Guns

If the PSN hacking debacle has taught us anything, it’s that solo campaigns in shoot ’em ups are way too overlooked in today’s multiplayer world. Bulletstorm changes that.
Bulletstorm is a visually gorgeous first person shooter laden with crass, corny dialogue and emblazoned with raucous stomping, slashing and shooting, all atop a luscious set of primary-coloured vistas that shoot off the screen.

While it’s a visual stunner, that hasn’t stopped the guys over at EA and Epic Games making something epic beyond just pretty sceneries. The gameplay itself is shaped perfectly around getting the all-encompassing feeling of immersion into the action – so where to start?

How about the start of the game? Bulletstorm sees players taking the role of an arrogant, mouthy juggernaut of a space pirate who takes up a barrage of chunky weapons and a giant, electric whip against hordes of crazed, and sometimes mutated, gun-toting locals of an abandoned metropolis.

The key part of this picture is the electric whip that stands out in the midst of bullets, grenades and stomping feet. The long, blue stream of energy is used to fling enemies into the air, hurl them toward you, pull down environmental barriers and explosives and generally kick more arse than you’d be doing with a machine gun alone.

The gameplay mechanics say hello in a big way here. In a bit of a subversion of the ‘bullet time’ slow-mo action of titles like Max Payne, Bulletstorm slows down individual enemies that you attack with your whip or boot into the air. While the faecal matter is hitting the proverbial fan all around you, you’re able to nip off shots at flailing enemies without slowing down the game’s vicious pace.

Before…

This leads onto the whole ‘style points’ element. FPS developers have learnt over the years that if they’re going to program cool elements into a game, these need to be spoon-fed to players or go unnoticed. Whether it’s painting explosive barrels red or straight out telling players, “SHOOT THIS THING HERE, NOW!” games are being tailored to accommodate any experienced gamers and newbies alike.

Bulletstorm’s no exception, but does it exceptionally. Players are eased into using their abilities to kill in a bout of glorified violence, where flinging enemies into the air, hog-tying them with wrap-around explosives, shots to the groin and defenestration earn style points that are used to upgrade weapons, further enticing raucous virtual murder. Interactive and destructible environments are all part of it, with shocking electronics, lethal plants, impaling steel and exploding barrels all thrown in to up the combos.

…and after

This rewarding for skilful take-downs keeps the gameplay fresh and exciting, challenging plays to do more than just run and gun, duck and cover, repeat. To make this possible though, the game isn’t ever that difficult from start to finish, even on harder difficulty settings. It’s a give and take, where simpler gaming and mechanics (including an unlimited sliding function which is fun as hell in some boss battles despite being insanely unrealistic) are used to make the key to the game’s fun work.

That’s not the only downfall – there’s also the dialogue. Anyone who’s played Killzone 2 (and thanks Killzone 3 for removing) knows how irritating over-kill on the overcompensating machismo banter can be, but Bulletstorm takes it to the nth degree. It tries to be funny, but more often than not it’s just a bit irritating, like a primary schooler who’s just discovered the wonders of swearing.

Otherwise, the game is quite the spectacle, from dynamic sound and picturesque textures on an epic scale, to near flawless programming with little to no visible bugs.

As another testament to the programming prowess of the Unreal 3 engine, Bulletstorm runs smooth on high graphics settings on a PC that’s a fair two years old. Comparatively, it runs smoother than both Crysis 2 and the older Crysis: Warhead, even during the motion-intensive bouts of gunfire that populate most of the game.

If you’re one of the few gamers out there like myself who still play single player campaigns in first person shooters, you’ll relish the opportunity to grab more than just a couple of half-arsed hours on a supplement to multiplayer. Welcome back single-player, we’ve missed you.

Bulletstorm is out now on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
