Six months after taking over Samsung’s struggling IT and commercial display division Phil Newton, the former Managing Director of BenQ, has turned the business around with the Company now struggling to keep up with demand for their notebooks and netbooks.
They are also witnessing strong demand for their monitors, printers and commercial display screens.
With Samsung notebooks and netbook on back order, Newton is now selling over 6,500 notebooks a month through a variety of mass market retailers. He has also expanded sales through telecommunication carriers such as Optus and later this month Telstra who are set to offer Samsung 3G notebooks on a data plan through their T Life stores.
According to GFK the IT sector, has in 2009 achieved year on year growth of 32.3% with notebook and netbook sales soaring
In the monitor market, where Newton has been successful in the past while working for both Mitsubishi and BenQ, he has been able to increase Samsung’s share of the monitor market with the Company with GFK data showing the Samsung has 26% share.
Newton who has spent a great deal of the last six months travelling claims that he has also doubled Samsung sales of commercial display screens into the Pro AV market and that he is looking for further growth in the retail, education and enterprise markets.
In the printer market Samsung is now the #1 multi function colour printer supplier and the #2 supplier of single function colour printers.
“My job in moving to Samsung was to grow the business and we are doing that. We have a lot of new products coming and I am confident that we can grow our business even further as we build new relationships in the channel and with retailers. In the Pro AV display market we have doubled our share of the commercial market and I am confident that there is a lot more growth in this category”.
Shortly before Newton came on board both LG and Samsung had pulled out of the notebook market.
