Call of Duty: Black Ops has overtaken sales of Wii Play to become the best selling video game of all time, selling a total of 13.7 million units in the US alone, says market research firm NPD.
The game, which was released in November last year is the seventh in the hugely popular Call of Duty Series, and has already broken a series of sales records. It grossed revenues of $358 million in its first 24 hours of sale, becoming the highest grossing entertainment on release.
Six weeks later it reached the $1 billion mark, joining an elite group of entertainment releases which have reached the billion dollar mark, including Michael Jackson’s Thriller album and James Cameron’s 1997 hit film, Titanic.
Developed by Treyarch and published by Activiaion, Call of Duty: Black Ops takes games on a series of Cold War adventures.
Activision CEO Bobby Kotick said: “Only Call of Duty and Avatar have ever achieved the billion dollar revenue milestone this quickly.”
