Customers are advised to shop around this Christmas to avoid being slapped with hefty delivery fees for large appliances.
John Hughes, managing director of BigBrownBox.com.au, said that customers, who may think they have found a bargain, often find at the end of their transaction that delivery fees of an extra $60 or more negate the savings they make on the item.
An informal phone survey conducted by BigBrownBox.com.au asked major retailers to quote the best price available at the time for a 32-inch LCD TV plus delivery costs to a fixed address in Sydney.
“Our calls found that most large retailers have delivery fees which can easily add an extra five to seven per cent to the price of a television or a refrigerator,” he said. “Often, the delivery fee is only revealed to consumers when they are about to pay for the goods, wiping out whatever money consumers thought they were saving in the first place.”
