Apple enthusiasts are hailing the potential of a preinstalled data-only SIM card in the new iPad Air 2, announced on Friday.
The SIM would allow users to change carriers at the tap of a finger and is being called a data-roaming killer.
At this stage it’s only available in the US and UK. The telcos involved allow consumers to buy short-term data plans and switch between the carriers to find the best deal.
If the network cuts out, iPad Air 2 users would be able to change carriers.
But analysts say the data-only SIM’s biggest plus is its potential to kill data-roaming charges, a big plus for today’s mobile executives.
It’s not clear if the SIM will be introduced in Australia.
