After warranty abuser Hewlett Packard was forced to withdraw their HP Chromebook from the Australian market, Dell has stepped up to fill the gap with a new Chromebook 11.
The unit which is set to go on sale shortly has been described as ideal for the education market.
Packing an 11.6-inch edge-to-edge glass screen with a resolution of 1366×768, the device has entry-level specifications, and is tipped to be sub $350.
Inside the Chromebook 11 is a fourth-generation Intel Celeron 2955U processor clocked at 1.4GHz, with a choice of 2GB or 4GB of RAM. A 16GB solid state drive is included for storage, with the notebook also equipped with a front-facing 720p webcam, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, two USB 3.0 ports, and HDMI-out. The light specification list allows it to have a claimed 10-hour battery life, and a boot time of under 8.4 seconds.

The device will ship with a central web-based control for IT managers, this allows education administrators to set the devices up so they can easily be logged into a school network.
It also allows the device to be remotely configured and tracked, administrators can remove applications remotely, while performing other related tasks.
The Dell Wyse PocketCloud application, supplied with the notebook, will allow the user to connect to shared storage for various educational materials, with Dell also working on releasing a downloadable version of the app for the Google Chrome Web Store in January, extending the app to other mobile devices and computers.
Dell will be shipping the 4GB version of the Chromebook 11 in January into the US market with Australia set to follow.
