Japanese camera makers are under pressure with shipments falling by more than 30%.
Brands such as Olympus, Fuji, Nikon, Canon, Sony and Panasonic are facing double digit declines as more consumers than ever before move to using smartphones as a their primary camera.
Japanese camera makers shipped 3.962 digital cameras in September 2014, this was down 32.5% year on year. Value of the shipments was US$765 million which was down 21.7%, according to the Japan-based Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA).
Shipments of 31.325 million units during the January-September fell on year by 32.7% and the corresponding shipment value fell 17.8%, CIPA indicated.
In Australia retailers are reporting a continuing fall in demand for digital SLR cameras.
