NCR has taken the wraps off a new range of automatic teller machines that it says will let consumers video-conference with real-life bank tellers directly from its ATMs.NCR ‘s APTRA Interactive Teller technology is claimed to let customers see and speak to live tellers simply by touching the ATM screen.
Once connected by video link, consumers could conduct a range of in-branch transactions, such as depositing cash or cheques without an envelope, paying a bill, opening an account or even initiating a loan, the company says.
NCR hasn’t commented on the likely reaction of ATM queuers to someone ahead of them spending many minutes video-chatting with bank staff. The very thought of someone applying for a loan or opening a new account while others wait to just hit the machine for a few dollars could lead to possible violent reactions.
NCR insists that video access to tellers through 24/7 ATM networks means Australian banks and credit unions could potentially provide their customers with branch-based services at any time of the day or night.
Ross Checkley, managing director of NCR in South Pacific, confirmed that a “major Australian financial institution” is now preparing for a consumer trial.
