In what has to be a massive publicity gimmick, Domino’s Pizza who are currently being sued for allegedly “ripping off” an app, has unveiled plans for what they are calling an autonomous pizza delivery vehicle.
The concept is being developed by Domino’s so called Domino’s Robotic Unit which no tech journalist have yet visited.
The DRU won’t be roaming Australian streets in the immediate future, but Domino’s has unveiled the prototype “to demonstrate just how serious they are about informing regulation in this space,” according to a media release.
It adds: “DRU is a four-wheeled vehicle with compartments built to keep the customer’s order piping hot and drinks cold while travelling on the footpath at a safe speed from the store to the customer’s door.”
The DRU is said to be able to navigate from a starting point to its destination, selecting the best path of travel, with on-board sensors providing for the identification of obstacles, which can be avoided if deemed necessary.
Developed within Domino’s DLAB purpose-built lab, the robot is powered by technology from Australian start-up Marathon Robotics.
Domino’s says it has been working with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads, along with other global partners, in ensuring the concept meets relevant legislative requirements. – Channel News
