This Sunday’s Emmys event will highlight the rivalry between streaming content shows and traditional television shows.

Set to inject suspense into the awards, five of the seven best-drama nominees are new shows, including three which are from online streaming service platforms – being Netflix’s “The Crown”, “Stranger Things” and Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale”.

The three streamed shows go up against traditional TV’s “Westworld” by HBO, and NBC’s “This Is Us”.

Interestingly, only Netflix’s “House of Cards” is a holdover from a run of perpetual nominees, which is in the mix for the fifth consecutive year.

The absence of notable nominees as “Downton Abbey” and “Game of Thrones” has opened up the playing field. The former has recently retired and the latter is ineligible to run as it had a later start date this year.

CBS will air the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards, and Stephen Colbert will be the host.
