An entrepreneurial ‘hitman’ has spawned in the midst of the Dark Knight Rises tragedy, where innocent moviegoers were killed and injured.Thousands of people have received a text message from a self-proclaimed ‘hitman,’ who claims has been hired to murder them. In the message, the hitman threatens those who tell the ‘police or anybody’ else they are promised death. Following is the message as it appears on Gizmodo:
“Sum1 paid me to kill you. get spared, 48hrs to pay $US5000. If you inform the police or anybody, death is promised. E-mail me now: firstname.lastname@example.org”
The scam text has been sent following the tragic shooting that took place during a screening of “The Dark Knight Rises”, where a gunman assassinated 12 and injured 70 innocent moviegoers.
It appears the scammer is looking to cash in on the widespread hysteria and sensationalism currently surrounding the event.
The government has advised to not engage or send money to the scammer(s) if you have received such a message, urging them to simply ignore it. If you have, visit the government’s ScamWatch page or call the ACCC Infocentre on 1300 302 502.
