AS several IT Companies move to power their devices using an Ethernet cable 3M, the Company famous for Post It Notes has created a way to power TV’s using an Ethernet cable.
3M who are involved in the commercial display industry, currently manufacture the polariser that sits between a liquid crystal and the glass on the front of a TV screen.
For the past few years 3M who are famous for their research has been looking at ways to deliver better power efficiency to display screens.
The company claims that its polarisers can help reduce the power requirement of LCD screens and by using an Ethernet cable reduce power use even further.
3M claims that it’s easier to install Ethernet cabling and sockets than it is traditional power outlets.
The concept of Ethernet powered TV’s are not without their problems. Consumers will need to invest in an Ethernet port, which requires PoE or Power over Ethernet – a defined standard, but not a commonly found feature on home routers.
3M said that Ethernet power ports are more affordable to install and eliminate the need for an electrician.
They are also pushing Ethernet cables claiming competing Wi Fi signals are playing havoc with many homes’ wireless networks.
If the idea takes off you will only need one cable for the TV.
