There is nothing like envy and design prowess to get a competitor going at CES where year in year out original designs are openly copied, only to appear a few months later on sale in various countries. At this year’s event SmartHouse caught a competitor openly copying Samsung’s design. At the Samsung stand–which is oozing original design from the very stand itself to the products on display–we caught one team who just happen to work for a major competitor to Samsung openly copying the design of Samsung’s new Ultra High Definition TV.
The man who turned up with his personal assistant to take notes had all the tools of the trade: a camera, hard measurement device and a calliper so that the measurements copied were 100% accurate.
When we challenged the individual, the first thing he did was cover up his identity on his access pass.
When he failed to stop measuring the device I asked him what it felt like being a design thief. He said in broken English “Everybody copies designs.” When asked which Country he came from he refused to answer my questions.
After copying the design of Samsung’s new UHD TV he then moved to photograph Samsung’s new home theatre products.
After measuring the device his assistant then produced a list of other products which they appeared to want to see.
