The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has proposed opening up more 1800MHz spectrum to Telstra, Optus and Vodafone, enabling larger rollouts of the companies’ 4G networks.

In a new issues paper, ACMA proposes that the three telcos be allocated a portion of the 1800MHz spectrum band in line with where they hold spectrum in metropolitan Australia.  Mining and energy companies and rail services – which want the spectrum for signaling and similar purposes – will get a minimum 2x 5MHz allotments.

ACMA proposes issuing licences for the 1800MHz spectrum band “as soon as practicable” in 2013.
