Approximately 20,000 Electrolux dishwashers have been recalled due to fears they may ignite following “a handful” of customers reports of smouldering units. Two Electrolux models – EX401ISB and ESL6163 – along with two Electrolux Dishlex models – DX303SK and DX303WK and six Westinghouse models – SB908WK, SB908SK, SB916WK, SB916SK, SB926WK and SB926SK – are included in the recall.
The units were sold from 1 April 2007 until approximately two weeks ago.
A wire connector within the appliance has been identified as the cause – the connector may, in extreme cases, overheat and cause a fire or melting of plastic components within the control panel.
According to an Electrolux spokesperson, about a handful of Australian customers had experienced “smouldering” dishwashers and had contacted Electrolux customer care. The company is now offering a free customer upgrade for affected units.
The company began contacting concerned retailers two weeks ago and is this week advertising the recall in all major metropolitan newspapers.
