Canon, who has been losing sales to mirrorless camera vendors such as Nikon, Panasonic, Olympus and Samsung in Australia, has finally jumped on the bandwagon with a new EOS M mirrorless camera. The new camera has an 18-megapixel APS-C sensor and a Digic 5 image processor, as well as a touchscreen interface. Out of the box the device does not look as smart as the Nikon 1; however, it does come with a new 18-55mm kit lens.
The new EOS M is a near-clone of the Rebel T4i with the same two-stage focusing system, which utilises both phase-difference and contrast AF in order to achieve focus more efficiently when capturing video.
The housing design and lens mount are a radical move away from the typical Canon DSLR with the device set to be a worthy competitor to established models from Nikon, Panasonic and Olympus.
The new sensor can reach up to ISO 12,800 sensitivity and boost up to ISO 25,600. It also features a 3-inch, 1,040,000-pixel touch screen.
Canon is introducing two new EF-M lenses to go with the EOS M, including a prime 22mm f/2 kit lens that will come included with the EOS M itself. An 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom lens will also be available. Canon digital SLR lenses will be useable with an adapter (pictured below), and certain Canon speedlights, GPS modules, and other accessories will be compatible with the EOS M.
