Fitbit is set to pull the plug on support for their Pebble smartwatch, it’s not known how many were sold in Australia.
Owners are set to be given an incentive to step up into the US Companies Ionic smartwatch.
Those users disappointed their Pebble watch has been designated for the knacker’s yard can score a $50 discount on the Fitbit Ionic smartwatch.
In a blog post, the firm wrote: “Pebble users are passionate about their smartwatches. With that in mind, Fitbit is extending its support of the Pebble smartwatch ecosystem for six more months, to June 30, 2018.”
It continued: “As a sign of appreciation for the Pebble community’s continued enthusiasm for wearable technology, we will be offering Pebble users who still own a device with a valid serial number $50 off a Fitbit Ionic smartwatch.”
Fitbit bought Pebble in 2016 and immediately shutdown the company, which paved the way for the smartwatches you see today through a number of record-breaking Kickstarter projects.
Following the acqui-hire, the remaining Pebble staff were set to work on a new operating system, which became the Fitbit OS that sits within the Ionic.
For the next six months Pebble users can “expect the same experience they enjoyed throughout 2017.”
After June 30, 2018 devices and mobile apps will continue to work but the App Store, forum, voice recognition features, SMS and email replies, Timeline Pins will be no more.
Although they’ll still function, there’ll also be no more updates to the Pebble apps for iOS and Android.
