Flip Video Camera War Cisco Vs Apple Vs Kodak

After months of speculation Cisco Australia has confirmed that they will launch their highly popular Flip video cameras in Australia, among the new models is the 4GB Flip MinoHD and the 2GB Mino, the move comes only days after Apple launched their new 8 and 16GB Nano player with a built in video camera.

Also set to compete with the new Cisco Flip camera is the new instant video camera from Kodak.

The new HD Flip is set to be priced at over $300 for a 4 GB model Vs $249, for a 16GB Apple Nano with video camera. Apple’s latest iPod offering also includes Apple’s iPod software which delivers access to the Apple iTunes store over a Wi Fi network.

A big advantage for the Flip HD Vs the Nano is that it delivers HD Video at 1280 X 720 Vs 640 X 480 video resolution with the Apple Nano offering.

The Cisco Flip Mino which comes with a 2GB drive will only record at 640 X 480.

Ironically it is the Flip HD Video Camera that should have the larger storage due to its ability to record HD content. With the 4GB Flip model users will only get one hour of recording at Full HD. While the Nano will record 16 hours of video content, with the Nano video camera running at 640 X 480.

While Pure Digital the makers of the Flip digital camera created the concept of pocket camcorders, and their Flip Video models the market has expanded significantly since Cisco purchased the Company for $590 million last year.

Among the new competitors are the Apple Nano and a new Flip model from Kodak the Full HD ZX1 which sells in Australia at $299. The model is water resistant and allows a 16GB or 32GB storage card to be inserted into the camera.

“The desire to not complicate the Flip has made Pure Digital wary to add new features or allow users to exert any kind of control over the camcorder,” says Mike Brady, editor of Camcorder HQ in the USA recently. “In contrast, Kodak has demonstrated that it’s possible to provide more opportunity for users without making things too complicated, and at a lower price.”

Since their acquisition by Cisco in March, Pure Digital has been relatively quiet, releasing only the Flip UltraHD, a product whose upgrades were largely cosmetic. “If Pure Digital doesn’t rise to this challenge soon by releasing a Flip that has an expanded feature-set like the Kodak models,” says Brady, “Cisco might begin to regret their investment.”

As part of their launch program Cisco has dumped long time PR partner Upstream for the launch of the Flip camera. The move came about following a pitch which saw Text 100 and their marketing Company Razor appointed to the project.
